Just after noon on Sunday, Harrison (11th) District police on patrol called out the sound of gunfire over the radio. Moments later, reports that multiple people had been shot started to roll in.
The two-car, multishooter attack in Humboldt Park left six people wounded, Chicago police said. A seventh victim, an 18-year-old man, was shot a dozen times and killed. His identity wasn’t publicly available as of Monday.
As police arrived at the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue, they found a dark blue Acura and a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the middle of the street, according to police reports obtained by the Tribune. Bystanders pointed officers toward a nearby alley, where they found a second man with multiple gunshot wounds.
Two other victims, a man and a woman, both took shelter inside a Chicago Police Department squad car, an initial police report stated. The woman had been in her car when she was shot twice in the hip and hit a CTA bus shortly afterward, according to that report.
A different early report said the woman also hit one of the shooters, who got into a black Honda Accord that appeared on police surveillance footage carrying some of the assailants.
The footage shows that the Acura found in the middle of the street was also carrying shooters. Together with the Honda, the shooters had driven westward on Chicago Avenue and turned south onto Christiana, where they got out, opened fire on the crowd and fled. The initial report stated that the shooters all got into the Honda and abandoned the disabled Acura at the scene.
Police recovered 70 rifle and handgun shell casings at the scene, per one report, and discovered that the Acura had been reported stolen out of Cicero.
The youngest person wounded in the shooting was a 14-year-old boy, who suffered gunshot wounds to both legs. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition, police said. The driver of the CTA bus was also taken to the hospital for observation.
