A woman was in custody Saturday after authorities said she stabbed a 7-year-old girl to death near a busy shopping area in the Chatham neighborhood.
The girl, identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, was walking south near the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when she was approached by an adult woman who was carrying a sharp object around 11:55 a.m., according to Chicago police. In broad daylight, the woman stabbed the girl multiple times in the back, police said.

Hernandez Chacon was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around an hour after the incident. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
The attacker was injured as bystanders detained her at the scene, police said. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment and placed into police custody, police said.
Authorities did not say if there was any relationship between the girl and her attacker. No charges were announced as Calumet Area detectives continued their investigation.
