An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a man twice during a physical altercation in Little Village after midnight Sunday, according to authorities.

The man is in fair condition at a local hospital and remains in police custody, and the officer will be placed on routine administrative duties as the incident is investigated.

The off-duty officer was driving in the 2600 block of West 24th Street when he stopped his vehicle around 12:48 a.m. to talk with a group standing on the sidewalk. A man from the group approached and struck the officer in the face, police said, at which point the officer discharged his firearm, shooting the man twice.

The off-duty policeman then drove a short distance down the street and stopped his vehicle, which he exited to fire additional shots in the direction of the group, according to Chicago police.

The man who was shot was later transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. Another man with the group was injured in the arm, though it was immediately unclear whether it was from a gunshot, and later he went to the same hospital in good condition.

The officer was also taken to a hospital for injuries from the initial physical altercation. According to an internal police notification obtained by the Tribune, he had a “minor injury to the face” and was reported in good condition.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is currently investigating.
