Authorities on Friday said a person was in custody after a woman was found strangled inside a Chatham apartment while a second woman reported that she was sexually assaulted at the same location.
The victim, a 36-year-old woman, was found unresponsive inside a residence in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue some time after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to Chicago police. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman, 28, reported to police that she had been assaulted by a male at the same location, authorities said.
An autopsy performed Friday determined that the unresponsive woman died of strangulation and the death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The office didn’t immediately release the woman’s identity, but records indicate she was a resident of northwest suburban Algonquin.
Police offered no other details about the incident, but said Calumet Area detectives were questioning the person of interest Friday.
