A 70-year-old woman was fatally shot on the city’s South Side Wednesday afternoon after an argument turned physical, authorities said.

The woman was inside a residence in the 1900 block of West 83rd Street in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood with a 63-year-old man when they got into a verbal altercation at around 3:20 p.m., according to Chicago police. The argument devolved into the man producing a gun and firing shots at the woman.

The woman, whose identity wasn’t immediately released, was shot in her neck and chest and pronounced dead on scene. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

One firearm was recovered on scene, police said. The man was arrested and charges were pending as of Wednesday night.

The shooting is believed to be domestic in nature. Calumet Area detectives were investigating.
