A majority of City Council members came out today in opposition to Mayor Brandon Johnson potentially taking another go at a corporate employee head tax in the upcoming 2027 budget.
The letter signed by 29 aldermen is an early attempt by Johnson’s council opposition to stake out its territory ahead of the mayor’s fourth budget address next month.

Pope Leo blasts assisted dying as ‘false compassion’ at French shrine known for miraculous cures
Pope Leo XIV condemned the legalization of medically assisted death as immoral “false compassion,” reaffirming Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life during a visit to Lourdes, the French shrine associated with miraculous healings. Leo had specifically criticized a medical-aid-in-dying law that took effect on Sept. 12 in his home state of Illinois — the 13th U.S. state with such a law. Read more here.

Congo’s Ebola outbreak tops 8,000 confirmed cases as disease remains out of control
