A 26-year-old man died Friday after gunmen opened fire on him and chased his vehicle until it crashed into a pole in the city’s Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The victim was standing near his vehicle at a gas station in the 7500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue around 7 p.m. when a black sedan approached him. Two people inside displayed firearms and opened fire, police said.

The victim entered his vehicle and drove away but the gunmen followed him and continued to shoot in his direction while in traffic, police said.

The chase ended when the victim, who suffered wounds to the back and knee, crashed into a pole near 74th and Cottage. He was taken to UChicago Medicine where he later was pronounced dead. The gunmen fled the scene.

Detectives were investigating.
