CALUMET CITY MAN FACES UP TO 40 YEARS IN FATAL SHOOTING
A Calumet City man is facing up to 40 years in a deadly gas station shooting.
Soloman Martin, 39, pleaded guilty last week to voluntary manslaughter and a gun enhancement.
If a judge accepts, a sentencing hearing is Nov. 13.
The plea deal calls for a 30-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter and up to 10 years on a gun enhancement.
Martin was originally charged with murder in the June 25, 2023 death of Ronnie Martin, 33, of Chicago, no relation.
Hammond Police responded June 25, 2023 to a reported homicide at a Luke’s gas station, 5105 State Line Ave. Officers found 13 bullet casings at the scene.
Surveillance video showed Soloman Martin and a woman pull up in a silver Ford Edge around 2 a.m. He got out and went to the pay window. The woman with him got out and walked toward him.
Then, an unidentified man tried to get into their running car. The woman blocked him from getting in and was “visibly upset.”
She and Martin left the gas station for his nearby apartment minutes later. He appeared not to notice what the other man did.
Less than 10 minutes later, Soloman Martin appeared to go back to confront him. He punched him, then pulled out a gun. The other man fell or dove behind a red Jaguar.
That car was caught in the “line of fire,” charges state.
Passenger Ronnie Martin was shot once in the left chest.
CROWN POINT MAN FACES UP TO 16 YEARS FOR MOM’S NEGLECT BEFORE DEATH
A Crown Point man faces up to 16 years after he admitted he neglected his mother before her death.
Perry Fuller, 62, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony.
If a judge accepts the plea, his sentencing is Dec. 15.
Police responded Oct. 24, 2022 to Perry’s home on the 1400 block of W. 99th Place where they found Janice Fuller, his mother, dead. She had lived with him since 2016, records state.
An autopsy showed she had “extreme malnourishment,” “very poor hygiene,” “wrist fractures,” and “ulcers,” documents show.
Her son “did not provide medical treatment,” records show.
