A 61-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday during a home invasion in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 5:15 a.m., a male suspect entered an apartment in the 3000 block of North Lotus Avenue through a rear door and shot the victim before fleeing, a preliminary investigation revealed.

The victim, Fernando Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police. An early police statement said the victim was 60.

A witness told responding officers that they were in the basement with the victim when a man in a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants kicked in the door and shot the victim twice on the couch, according to a police report.

Grand Central Area (Area 5) detectives are investigating.
