An Auburn Gresham man has been ordered detained as he awaits trial after he allegedly shot his 70-year-old sister in front of their bedridden sibling earlier this week.

Auburn Gresham man faces murder charge after 70-year-old woman fatally shot

At an initial detention hearing Friday, Washington was held pending trial while prosecutors shed more light on the moments that allegedly preceded the shooting.

According to the prosecutors, Washington lived with his sister. Together, alongside a third sibling, they were the primary caregivers for a fourth sibling, who is 82 years old and bedridden.

On Wednesday afternoon, Dorothy Washington and the third sibling were in a room providing care to the fourth sibling, who has difficulty communicating after a recent medical episode, when the fourth sibling made a noise as their catheter was getting changed, prosecutors stated. Randy Washington, who was also in the room but standing by the door, heard the noise and believed they were hurting the fourth sibling.

Randy Washington then left the room, returned with a 9mm handgun and shot his sister, prosecutors alleged. Washington and the third sibling called 911. When first responders and authorities arrived, he held the door to the home, prosecutors said.

Police had initially stated that a man and a woman were arguing inside a residence in the 1900 block of West 83rd Street when the argument devolved into the man producing a gun and firing shots at the woman.

Dorothy Washington was struck in her neck and chest and pronounced dead on scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a homicide.

A total of three firearms were recovered from Randy Washington’s bedroom, prosecutors said. He carries both a firearm owner’s Identification card and a concealed carry license.

Washington’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 21.
