An e-bike rider struck in a multivehicle crash on the city’s Southwest Side earlier this week has succumbed to his injuries — a year and a half after an elderly pedestrian was struck and killed at the same intersection.

The e-bike rider was identified as Juan Martin Marquez Luna, of Garfield Ridge, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy performed Wednesday showed that he died of multiple blunt force injuries in an accident.

Early Monday morning, officers responded to the scene of an auto accident involving two vehicles and an electronic bike in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.

A black sedan was turning at the intersection of Archer and Laramie avenues when it was struck by a blue pickup truck at around 5:15 a.m., according to Chicago police. The truck then struck Luna, who was riding the e-bike.

The driver of the truck fled the scene while the e-bike rider was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with multiple injuries. He was initially listed in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday afternoon.

The fatal incident comes 16 months after 84-year-old Maria Ochoa Flores was struck and killed by a vehicle at Archer and Laramie. Ochoa Flores had been walking just blocks away from her home when she was hit at the intersection. The crash, at the time, spurred calls for change.

“This has to end,” Alberto Ochoa, Ochoa Flores’ son, had told reporters in the days after the May 2025 crash. “My mom, all she was doing was crossing the street, and she’s dead now.”

The Chicago Lawn District — which includes several Southwest Side neighborhoods, among them Garfield Ridge — has historically seen more crashes than other police districts.

As of Wednesday night, police said there were no updates in Monday’s crash and that the Major Accidents Investigation Unit was continuing to investigate.
