Duneland School Corporation students will only have to make up two out of eight days missed due to the Aug. 11 derecho.

Superintendent Robert McDermott told the Duneland School Board at Monday’s meeting that the issue was settled after discussions with the Indiana Department of Education.

Duneland was hardly alone as several school districts across Indiana sought waivers for days missed because of storm damage.

School was originally going to start on Aug. 13, but extensive storm damage in the district that stretches across 92 square miles pushed back the opening until Aug. 24.

McDermott explained that the state Department of Education took into consideration that Duneland’s hours of instruction exceeded state standards, adding up to more than 27 days at the elementary level and 15 days for fifth through 12th grade students.

Class will be in session on Feb. 12, 2027, and April 9, 2027, which were previously scheduled as days off.

Board member Kirk Redman said he’s learned through this process how the Duneland district was committed to providing more instructional hours.

The board also approved its calendar for the 2027-2028 school year. School will commence on Aug. 11, 2027, and end on May 24, 2028.
