More than 50 cars burned Sunday at a result of a fire at an Elgin vehicle salvage yard, according to the Elgin Fire Department.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at Copart, 1475 Bluff City Blvd., about 4:35 a.m., Assistant Fire Chief Chris Kennedy said.

The initial report came in as a brushfire off Gifford Road, not far from Copart, Kennedy said. When firefighters arrived to see the vehicles on fire, the call was upgraded and help provided by the Pingree Grove, South Elgin, Fox River and Bartlett fire protection districts.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a damage estimate was not available, Kennedy said.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, arson is not suspected because firefighters said the gates to the property were locked when they arrived, he said. It is not uncommon for cars involved in accidents to catch fire, particularly from battery-related issues, he said.
