A shackled escapee who had been in ICE custody and was the subject of a manhunt near the Interstate 94 exit for Burns Harbor/Porter was apprehended Tuesday night, police said.

Indiana State Police-Lowell Post said in a Facebook post around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday that the subject, who had been in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, had been apprehended.

Police had described the escapee as a Hispanic male in an initial post, made shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Police had said if the man was observed, not to approach him and to call 911 immediately.

State police transferred custody of the man to ICE, according to a release.

Following the exchange, an ICE officer was transporting the individual westbound on I‑94 near Exit 22 in Burns Harbor to a holding facility for processing, police said.

During transport, the suspect was able to free himself from his restraints and subsequently jumped from the moving vehicle, fleeing north across the highway into a brush line.

Police said he was wearing a black “Scarface” T-shirt, dark pants and shackles,

Local law enforcement officers, including troopers from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post, responded to assist in the search. After several hours, police located the subject near a marsh area.

The suspect, cold and wet after hiding in the water for more than five hours, was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

State police referred additional questions to ICE or the Department of Homeland Security.
