Two people are dead and a third person is injured following a Saturday night shooting at a strip mall just east of the Interstate 65 and Indiana 2 interchange in an unincorporated Lowell, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Indiana State Police troopers and Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a call at Karmic Sunshine, an antiques and accessories shop located at 2996 W. 181st Avenue.
A Sunday update from police indicates that a 62-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, who were in a relationship, were arguing at the shop and it turned physical when the man shot her. He also wounded the woman’s daughter, 24, who was attempting to escape when she was shot in the arm, according to a release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Police said the suspect is believed to have subsequently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 24-year-old woman was transported to a Chicago hospital where she was listed as stable, the release stated. The husband and young child of the 24-year-old woman who survived the shooting were also present but were not injured.
Detectives have learned that the shooting suspect and the owner of the antiques store were living in a trailer behind the store, police said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has not released the names of the deceased as it is in the process of contacting the family of the suspected shooter.
The wounded woman was hospitalized in stable condition, the release stated. A young child and another man were present during the incident but not injured.
ISP said in a statement that the Sheriff’s Department was the lead agency and any further information will come from them.
“There is no ongoing threat to the public and the scene is secure,” the ISP’s statement read.
