The Lake County Coroner’s Office said the victim was a 31-year-old Hinsdale resident.
The woman went underwater at about 7 p.m. in the river at the Independence Grove Forest Preserve. According to Forest Preserves Police Chief Ron Davis, the woman went into the water to assist her son.
After helping the boy reach another family member, the woman went underwater. A family member and others nearby helped pull her from the water.
Forest Preserves police and the Libertyville Fire Department responded and rendered medical aid to the woman. She was brought to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Davis said he was “deeply saddened” by the death.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” he said.
The investigation is continuing.
