A teenager was taken into custody for making a bomb threat against a Wauconda school, police said.

Wauconda police said they received a report of a social media threat made against Wauconda High School at around 7:42 p.m. Wednesday. Although school was not in session, staff members and students were there participating in extracurricular activities.

Police evacuated the school and brought in dogs to search, but no explosives or unauthorized persons were located. The school was turned back over to education authorities.

As police continued their investigation, they determined that a 14-year-old was the source of the threat. The teen was taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct.

“The Wauconda Police Department takes all threats involving schools seriously,” the department said in a news release. “While no explosive device or other physical threat was located, every reported threat requires an immediate and thorough law enforcement response to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the community.”

K-9 competition

Two K-9s and handler/deputies from the sheriff’s office scored honors at a recent police dog competition in Texas.

K-9 Lux and Deputy John Forlenza finished second overall in the patrol dog competition, and K-9 Zeus and Deputy Kevin Harris finished 14th overall in the same category.

The officers and their dogs competed in the United States Police Canine Association’s National Patrol Dog Field Trials in Abilene. The field trials test dogs in areas designed to mimic actual police work, including evidence detection, obedience, and criminal apprehension.

“Competing at the national level is a significant accomplishment in itself, and Deputy Forlenza/K-9 Lux and Deputy Harris/K-9 Zeus represented the Lake County Sheriff’s Office extremely well,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “These results reflect the dedication and countless hours of training our handlers and K-9s put in every day.”
