
KAYAK RESCUE COURSE BEING HELD ON WHALON LAKE
A Forest Preserve District of Will County course on kayak rescue techniques will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, on Naperville’s Whalon Lake, near Royce Road and Route 53.
Registration is required by Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Certified paddling instructors will teach participants a variety of ways to conduct self-rescues and cooperative rescues. Participants will learn about different types of kayaks and what makes some easier to enter from the water than others, a course description said.
Kayakers can bring their own boat to see how they and their kayak perform in various scenarios, the description said.
The course is open to anyone 16 and older. Previous kayaking experience is required.

.POLICE FOUNDATION PLANNING END-OF-SUMMER SOCIAL
The Naperville Police Foundation will hold an end-of-the-summer social from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11 at Safety Town, 1320 Aurora Ave.
Children can ride their bikes through the streets of Safety Town and check out police vehicles, a news release said. Shaved ice will be provided by Sno Problems.
The event is free and open to all ages, the release said. Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres, department police officers and staff, and members of the police foundation’s board of directors are planning to attend.

LOAVES & FISHES EXPANDS HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS
Loaves & Fishes Community Services is using a federal community development tool that is expected generate about $2 million to help the organization expand access to healthy food.
Loaves & Fishes has closed on a New Markets Tax Credit transaction, which helps attract private investment and bring development funds to distressed areas or areas that serve a low-income population, a news release said.
The funding is part of the organization’s $15 million Nourish Together campaign designed to serve more residents in DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties. Food insecurity has increased by more than 50% since 2019 in Loaves & Fishes service area, which serves about 10,000 people a week and is the largest food pantry in the state, the organization said.
As part of Nourish Together, the organization will expand its Aurora Food Distribution Hub and increase its ability to serve more people with fresh, nutritious food closer to home.
NAMI DUPAGE TO HOLD 5K, COLOR RUN FUNDRAISER
NAMI DuPage will hold a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile color run and a community health fair starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at St. James Farm Forest Preserve, 2S541 Winfield Road, Warrenville.
Funds raised will support NAMI DuPage’s mental health programs and services, which serve more than 35,000 people each year, a news release said.
The color run, which will take place at 10:45 a.m., is co-hosted with the DuPage Prevention Leadership Team and led by local high school students as part of the Anti-Stigma Campaign, the release said.
Participants with wheelchairs, strollers and leashed pets are welcome, the release said.
The health fair will feature booths from area organizations that will provide information and resources related to mental health.
