One person died and several others were injured after a wrong-way driver on the Dan Ryan Expressway caused multiple collisions Friday night, authorities said.

Just before 5:50 p.m., Illinois State Police responded to reports of a five-unit crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 94 at 55th Street.

State police, citing preliminary investigation, said a wrong-way driver entered the northbound lanes of the expressway at 31st Street, then traveled southbound and caused multiple collisions near Garfield Avenue. In the wake of the multi-car pileup, one person was declared dead and multiple other injuries were reported, state police said.

As of 8 p.m. Friday, all northbound traffic had been diverted off 67th Street while the scene remained active. State police advised travelers to avoid the area.
