A person of interest is in custody after a teenager was fatally shot in a triple shooting on the city’s Southwest Side Tuesday morning that left two others critically injured, police said.
The teen, 17, was in the 5000 block of South Throop Street in the New City neighborhood alongside two men, 56 and 61, when a dark colored SUV stopped nearby at around 7:40 a.m., according to Chicago police. The teen was outside while the two men were inside a car.
An unknown gunman got out of the SUV and opened fire, striking all three victims, police said. The teen was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The teen’s identity had not been publicly released as of late Tuesday afternoon, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which said next of kin had not yet been notified.

The 61-year-old was shot in the back and transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The 55-year-old was shot in his right arm and also transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. No other injuries were reported, police said.
Late Tuesday evening, police said a person of interest was in custody.
The shooting comes weeks after two other triple shootings in New City earlier this month. On May 5, a woman was killed and two teenagers were seriously injured by a motorcycle-riding gunman along 50th Street, authorities said at the time. Days beforehand, two teens and a young man were injured in a shooting less than a mile away.
