A North Chicago man has been charged after he fled from a traffic stop and his car door struck a Lake County sheriff’s deputy, authorities said.

The incident happened at about 12:20 a.m. Monday when the deputy stopped a vehicle that was speeding on Illinois Route 41, near Route 173, police said. After the vehicle pulled over, the officer approached it and smelled marijuana, according to reports.

The officer asked the driver, Jordon Cunningham, 25, to exit, but Cunningham instead accelerated away, with the driver’s side door hitting the deputy, police said.

Cunningham fled onto Interstate 94 into Wisconsin, and police were able to disable his vehicle in Kenosha. Cunningham and two passengers in his car were taken into custody.

During the pursuit, according to police, three firearms and bags of marijuana were thrown from the car.

Cunningham was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated fleeing, along with numerous traffic citations. Police are investigating whether additional charges are warranted.
