A Lake Villa man was killed early Thursday in a single-car crash in western Lake County, according to police.
The identity of the 23-year-old man has not yet been released by authorities.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the man crashed his Audi S4 into a line of trees near the intersection of West Dowell and West Neville roads at around 1:35 a.m.
In the moments before the crash, a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy clocked the man driving 74 mph in an area with a 35-mph speed limit. As the deputy turned their car around, the Audi accelerated, and the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The car apparently struck several trees before coming to a stop about 200 feet off the roadway. The driver suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
