A 7-month-old infant girl was found safe after a man took off in the car she was inside of Thursday morning at a gas station on the city’s West Side, Chicago police said.

A 36-year-old woman was standing next to her vehicle at a gas station in the 1200 block of South Independence Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood around 10:40 a.m. when a 38-year-old man entered her vehicle and took off, police said. The 7-month-old baby was inside.

The vehicle was recovered a short time later, and the alleged thief was taken into custody, police said. The baby was taken to an area hospital where she was listed in good condition, police said.

Charges were pending.
