Relatives of the victim identified him as John Branscomb but denied further comment on Tuesday. Police did not discuss what they believe spurred the outbreak of violence at the popular tourist destination, or how the men were acquainted.
During the quarrel, the 64-year-old pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Branscomb multiple times, police said. Branscomb was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officers found the older man still at the scene near a set of stairs and some scattered drops of blood, according to a police report. He also had a laceration on his chest and was taken to Northwestern, where he was listed in serious condition.
Police on Tuesday said detectives were continuing to investigate the incident, but didn’t say why the man was released without charges.
