Police have opened a homicide investigation after a 72-year-old man was found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a bathtub in his Avalon Park home on the city’s South Side, authorities said.
The man, whose identity wasn’t immediately released, was discovered in a bathtub inside a residence on the 7700 block of South Avalon Avenue and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 2:50 p.m., according to Chicago police.
Officers from the South Chicago police district arrived at the victim’s first-floor apartment after a neighbor discovered the victim’s body in his bathtub, police said. The victim, wrapped in a blanket, appeared to have suffered blunt force trauma to his head and cuts to his abdomen, police said.

A trail of blood led from the living room to the victim’s body and a knife was found next to the victim’s body, police said.
An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
No arrests had been made as an investigation by Calumet Area detectives was underway.
