Time for Gen Z to step up

I strongly believe an apology is well overdue. We Boomers had opportunities to work hard and live the American Dream. The world had just closed out a horrible time in history — World War II. We children of the homecoming warriors had some initial struggles, but many of us felt there were many positive opportunities before us. Unfortunately, many of us grew up not realizing some of the horrible inequities mired in our society.

As many of the brave leaders directly tackled these problems, there were many positive outcomes for many of these issues. Everything seemed to be heading in a great direction. Our democracy seemed to be firing on most cylinders. However, in recent years complacency set in.

So Gen Z, here is your inheritance: A Supreme Court that doesn’t believe in climate change or a woman’s right to choose. Probably the most divisive and angry country I have witnessed in my 70-plus years. An election system that is captive to money, with undue influences on decisions instead of truth and justice as the driving force.

My wife and I are retired educators. We have worked with many talented young people. We believe that there is still time to right the ship. Gen Z, get involved and maybe the inheritance you pass to future generations won’t need an apology attached.
