A man was treated and released from a hospital after suffering minor injuries from a house fire Friday night in Hammond, officials said.
Fire Chief Jeff Smith said fire investigators continued Saturday to sift through the wreckage in the 1200 block of Hoffman Street. Firefighters received the call at 8 p.m. Friday that the house was on fire.
When they arrived, the house was already engulfed in flames, and a person said to be living there was lying on the front lawn, Smith said. The man tried to refuse treatment, Smith said, but firefighters were able to convince him to go to Franciscan Hospital Hammond to get checked out for smoke inhalation.

The homeowner wasn’t at the house during the fire, Smith said.
The fire’s cause is still pending, but Smith said it appears to have started in a sun porch on the house’s northeast side. A neighbor’s house appeared to have suffered some heat damage to its siding, he said.
