Spelling bee: Woodland Middle School will host the 2016 National Geographic Bee at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the school’s Learning Resource Center, 7000 Washington St. Twenty-one finalists from 6th, 7th and 8th grade will participate for the first round of the competition. The winner of the Woodland Middle School Bee will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competition. The winner of the state competition will advance to the national championship May 22-25 in Washington, D.C., where he or she will be eligible to win a $50,000 college scholarship. Fair: The Class of 2020 Curriculum Night and Activities/Athletics Fair will be held Tuesday at Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley St. Parents/students with last names A-L should arrive by 6:30 p.m. for a 30-minute presentation, those with last names M-Z should arrive by 7:15 p.m.. Both presentations will be in English and Spanish. The program will include an overview of academic programs, an explanation of the block schedule, orientation to the course selection process and information about new programs like STEM education, Project Lead the Way and the Business Incubator Lab. Incoming freshmen also will receive their academic placements for the 2016-2017 school year. Following the academic presentation, students and parents will attend the Activities and Athletics Fair where they will learn about the 40 clubs and 29 different athletic teams available at MHS. Workshop: A free workshop to help students and/or parents complete financial aid forms and apply for many types of financial aid will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mundelein High School. It will be presented in both English and Spanish. Attendees will get help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is also available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This form is required to be considered for state and federal financial aid programs. Those attending the workshop should bring student and parent 2014or 2015 tax forms, driver’s license or state ID and Social Security card and recent bank statements. If tax forms have not been completed, W-2 forms and final paycheck stubs for the year are acceptable. Also needed are information about assets such as savings, certificates of deposit, stock options, bonds and investment real estate, business and farm. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), local financial aid experts and ISAC-trained volunteers will be available to answer questions. Family night: Woodland School District 50’s Primary School will host PBIS Family Night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 17366 W. Gages Lake Road. The main objective of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. The event is open to all Primary students and their families. Activities will focus on making positive choices and building positive relationships at school and at home. Families will participate in a variety of activities that teach sharing, taking turns, using kind words, impulse control and other positive behaviors. Each family who attends will receive a variety of coupons from local businesses. Participants will also be entered into a raffle for a chance to win prizes throughout the event. Fundraiser: Emmons Grade School’s PTO will host a fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Skate on Grand Roller Rink, 720 E. Grand Ave., Fox Lake.
