An Aurora man is facing weapons and drug charges after a search of his vehicle turned up a handgun and marijuana on Sunday, Aurora police said.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, Steven Strickland Jr., 25, 100 block of Raintree Court, was stopped by an Aurora officer around 10:23 p.m. in the area of North Park Avenue and Highland Avenue for not having a rear registration light.

Ferrelli said when the officer asked Strickland for his license and registration, Strickland reached into the center console, and quickly slammed it shut.

While the console was open, the officer spotted a Mason jar tucked inside, police said. Ferrelli said that Mason jars are frequently used to store and transport marijuana. An investigation ensued and ended with the officer finding 8.83 grams of marijuana inside the jar, Ferrelli said.

During a more extensive search of Strickland’s vehicle, police also located a handgun, Ferrelli said.

Strickland was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon, no rear registration light, no insurance and possession of marijuana, police said.
