Three Aurora men are in custody and being questioned following a Sunday night shooting in Aurora, police said.

The men, ages 19, 21, and 24, were arrested following an investigation into a 10:09 p.m. shooting and subsequent traffic crash that occurred near Grove Street and Northeast Drive.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, officers were called to the scene for reports of shots fired and a head-on collision that appeared to be related.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicate the 19- and 21- year-old suspects in custody were chasing a couple of unidentified men in the area and fired a couple of shots at them.

The suspects then approached a parked Chevrolet Tahoe driven by an 18-year-old woman, according to police. Inside the car were an 18-year-old woman, three 13-year-old girls and two boys, ages 13 and 14.

Police said that when the people inside the Tahoe saw the gun, they allegedly panicked. The 18-year-old driver then hit the gas and crashed head-on into an oncoming Hyundai Elantra at the intersection of Grove Street and Northeast Drive, Ferrelli said.

The Elantra’s 20-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger were taken to an Aurora hospital with injuries.

The three 13-year-old girls inside the Tahoe, along with the 14-year-old boy, were also transported with injuries.

Ferrelli said the men with the gun fled from the scene on foot. They were arrested when they returned to the scene a short while later in a car driven by the 24-year-old man in custody, police said.

The three men are still in custody and being questioned, police said.
