A mother will not face charges after allegedly leaving her toddler inside a vehicle while she quickly shopped on Saturday in Yorkville.
Yorkville police were called to a store parking lot in the 400 block of East Countryside Parkway around 4:24 p.m. after someone reported seeing a toddler left unattended inside a vehicle.
Yorkville Police Department Deputy Chief Larry Hilt said charges were not filed against the mother, who was inside the store for approximately 8 minutes before police arrived.
Hilt said the woman had just exited the store and was leaving in her vehicle when officers conducted a traffic stop. They learned the 18-month-old child had been sleeping inside the running vehicle when the mother decided to go inside the business and purchase a shirt. Hilt said the air conditioning in the vehicle was on.
In order for charges to be filed, Hilt said the child must be left inside a vehicle unattended for 10 or more minutes.
