A man was critically injured during an Aurora home invasion Friday after being shot while trying to ward off the intruders.
The incident began around 9:20 p.m. at a home in the 1200 block of East Galena Boulevard where police said a 17-year-old girl was home alone.
The girl told Aurora police that two armed men broke into the home, grabbed her, and led her through the residence while asking for money.
According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, a 54-year-old man came home during the break-in and began fighting with one of the armed suspects.
Ferrelli said the man was shot several times during the scuffle and was critically injured.
Following the shooting, both suspects and the man and girl inside the home fled the residence.
The wounded man made it about a block away from the home when he collapsed in the street, police said. The 17-year-old girl was able to run to a home on the same block and call for help.
Ferrelli said the wounded man was taken to an Aurora hospital and is expected to survive.
Evidence gathered by investigators suggests the incident was drug-related, Ferrelli said.
