The trial of a Zion man accused of stabbing another man last September, leaving him in critical condition, is scheduled for next week.

Surgene Cabell Jr., 26, is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing the victim, also a Zion resident, twice during a dispute on Sept. 14, 2014.

Attempted murder is a Class X felony, carrying a sentencing range of six to 30 years in prison. He was also charged with three counts of aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony with a sentencing range of two to five years.

Cabell has been held in Lake County Jail on $150,000 bail since his arrest by Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies following an investigation by Zion police.

According to Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Jim Newman, Cabell was engaged in an argument with the 24-year-old male victim outside a home in the 2300 block of Gideon Avenue when he stabbed the victim twice in the upper body.

The victim was transported by rescue squad to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Newman said he has since recovered.

Jury selection in Cabell’s trial is expected to begin Feb. 23. The trial will be heard before Judge Mark Levitt.
