Michael Martin Murphey said performing his 1975 hit “Wildfire” on David Letterman’s show last week was the highlight of his career. “I don’t remember ever feeling on top of a mountain as much as I did at that moment,” the country singer said.

Murphey, 62, credits Letterman, who has been playing “Wildfire” snippets for more than a month, with making it one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes. But we were surprised that Murphey doesn’t quite know what the song — about a woman and a pony — means. “I dreamed that song,” said Murphey, set to headline this weekend’s salute to actor John Wayne in Winterset, Iowa. “And I’ve spent over 30 years trying to understand the totality of what that dream means.”
