Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
His trip to the outskirts of NFL glory has taken Marty Schottenheimer on a decorated but tortured journey. How can a man win 200 games yet constantly be identified with never having made it to the Super Bowl? It all seems lines up perfectly for him this year. He coaches the best team in the NFL, the 14-2 Chargers. He has the best player, LaDainian Tomlinson. And he has arguably the best defensive player, Shawne Merriman. But Schottenheimer could be fighting for his coaching life. With one year left on his contract, he has gotten no indication from team President Dean Spanos or general manager A.J. Smith that an extension is coming. They have made it plain that he needs to win at least one big game.
