Still the consummate Chicago blues-club singer, even after moving to Lincoln, Neb., Morris “Magic Slim” Holt plays a set like the one on this live album hundreds of nights every year. At times, the deep-and-rubbery-voiced singer and finger-picking electric guitarist throws himself into the music — he finds menace in Muddy Waters’ “Still a Fool” and a dirty, funky groove on the finale, Albert Collins’ “Get Your Business Straight.” And just as often the Mississippi-born, Chicago-bred veteran is content to coast on the standard 12-bar format — “Please Don’t Dog Me” drags on for almost seven minutes, an eternity on a CD when you can’t watch the steam rising from Slim’s fingers.
