The Rosebuds
“Birds Make Good Neighbors”
“Make Out,” the first album from the Rosebuds, showed more promise than anything else. On “Birds Make Good Neighbors,” the husband and wife team of Kelly Crisp and Ivan Howard make a great leap forward. “Hold Hands & Fight” features a sing-along “whoa-whoa” chorus, and “Boxcar” and “Leaves Do Fall” have the kind of darkness missing from so much of indie-rock. Elsewhere “Blue Bird” comes across as a ballad of sheer simplicity and beauty, and “Shake Our Tree” captures the kind of bittersweet give-and-take vocals between Crisp and Howard that raise the best songs to celebratory levels. Looking for the next big thing? Look no further.
Best track: “Shake Our Tree,” an overheard conversation between two birds in love.
