Short? Good news, so are American women! American women average 5 foot 4, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

What’s more, American women aren’t just short, they apparently are shrinking. Number crunchers at The New Yorker magazine used data from the center and found that women born in the late 1950s and early 1960s are a third of an inch taller than women born a decade later.

But short women don’t always pair with short men. A study by The Royal Society in Britain found that women considered taller men more attractive than men of average height. Researchers followed 10,000 men and women born in the same week in 1958.

Tall men and short women were the least likely to be single or childless at age 42. A 6-foot-1 man in the study was more likely to have children or a partner than a 5-foot-8 man.

Shorter men who are worried that they’ll get inched out of the dating scene can always fake it. The Richlee Shoe Co. sells elevator shoes that lift wearers as much as 3 inches. Some of its customers, says President Bob Martin, are actually taller men looking to hit the 6-foot mark.

“No matter how tall they are, everybody wants to be taller,” he said.

The shoes have hidden inserts and tall backs that help conceal the elevator effect. But wearing elevator shoes on dates might be false advertising that requires an eventual height confession. Consider the tallness talk secondary.

“The main thing is to get your foot in the door,” Martin said.

And more men might be looking for a way to get their foot in the door. American men average 5 foot 9 and haven’t grown in 50 years.
