The world of wine seems more interconnected all the time. Wine producers trot the globe and may own property in many wine regions. No surprise, then, that a California winemaker, Paul Hobbs, makes this malbec from Argentina. But this charming malbec–with the label featuring a mythical animal based on local folk art–is of its place, with the fruit and spice we expect from the varietal. It has deep color and a pleasant oaky aroma. Easy drinking with soft tannins and a medium body, it was yet a bit young and should only improve. We found that food brings out its fruit and spicy character even more. Try it with a rich, tomatoey pasta dish or broiled or roasted lamb chops. Price: $14 (the price as published has been corrected in this text).
