Best of times: The 2001 season. Dick Jauron’s turnaround as a coach came after the 2000 season, when he stripped Cade McNown of the quarterback’s job and turned to Shane Matthews and Jim Miller. The team responded with a 13-3 record, marked by some overdue good fortune but more by solid scheming and consistency at the top.
Worst of times: Too many. Losses to Detroit and Green Bay this season with his job and the playoffs in the balance. . . . Allowing McNown to ruin the 2000 season. . . . Resistance to changing his offense the last two seasons, in particular leaving the offense in the control of John Shoop, woefully overmatched in the evolving war against NFL defenses.
