Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In a life-threatening emergency, every second counts. With the Emergency Beacon light bulb from Safety Think Inc. of Hudson, Ohio, a porch light can save precious seconds by helping police, paramedics or other rescue personnel find your house more quickly.

The Emergency Beacon light bulb looks and works like an ordinary 60-watt bulb until the light switch is turned off and on twice. A microchip inside the bulb then causes the bulb to flash.

Safety Think distributes the bulb for bulbmaker Response Technology Corp. of Stafford, Va. As a local firefighter, Safety Think president Gary Maher liked the bulb right away.

“A guy in a town near here told me he had an ambulance call and drove by the house three times before he found it,” Maher said. “If that house had had the Emergency Beacon, he’d have found it right away. I know when I get calls at night, I’m often slowing down, squinting, trying to find the right house number.”

The bulb fits regular light sockets, so it can be used in existing porch or yard lights as well as interior lights.

The flash is visible at night as far as the eye can see. It is visible in daylight for about 125 yards.

Maher said his company is distributing the bulb mainly to businesses, such as utility companies, and community organizations that sell them as fund-raisers.

Bulbs are $9.95 (plus $4 shipping and handling for up to three bulbs) through the Safety Think Web site at www.safetythink.com or by phone at 330-655-6019.
