Gary Police allege a Crown Point woman registered nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol after she rear-ended and killed a man on a moped in May, documents state.

Janine Mitchell, 33, is charged with causing death when operating a vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more, and causing death when operating while intoxicated, both Level 4 felonies.

She posted a $3,500 bond Tuesday.

The victim, Marques Taylor, died of his injuries.

Gary Police responded just after 10:30 p.m. May 20 to E. 7th Avenue and Lake Street in Gary’s Miller section.

The owner of 18th Street Brewery told police Mitchell just left before the crash.

Mitchell, in a 2025 Buick Envision, told police she didn’t see Taylor’s moped, saying it was “stopped in the middle” of the street, records state. She had two glasses of wine that night, she told officers.

“Why did you hit me,” Taylor told her.

Police got a warrant for a blood draw. Her blood alcohol content was .158, an affidavit states.

Surveillance footage appeared to show the moped’s taillight was working. The video appeared to show the aftermath of the crash, according to records.
