Police have launched a death investigation after a Gage Park woman died in a Chicago hospital more than a week after she suffered a fall and an apparent domestic battery the same evening.

The woman, Maria Delgado, 54, had been hospitalized since Oct. 9 after falling at an unspecified event she attended. While riding to the hospital, Delgado and a 58-year-old man began arguing about the fall before the man struck her across the face in the 3900 block of West 58th Street in the West Elsdon neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The man was arrested at the hospital and charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery, police said.

Delgado died last Saturday afternoon at Stroger Hospital, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. On Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office said Delgado’s cause of death was pending the results of the police investigation and further studies.
Police Tuesday evening said the investigation by Wentworth Area detectives was still active.
