The Chicago police officer who shot a man while off-duty earlier this month in the Little Village neighborhood has been stripped of his police powers, according to a Chicago Police Department spokesperson.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Oct. 4, officer Edgar Delgado-Arroyo was driving in the 2600 block of West 24th Street when he stopped to talk with a group of people on the sidewalk, police said previously. A man in the group then approached the off-duty officer and hit him in the face.

The officer shot the man twice before driving a short distance east. Delgado-Arroyo then got out of his vehicle and fired two guns in the direction of the group, according to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. The shooting was captured on video.

The man shot by the officer was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Delgado-Arroyo was also taken to a hospital for injuries from the initial physical altercation. According to an internal police notification previously obtained by the Tribune, he had a “minor injury to the face” and was reported in good condition.

A CPD spokesperson confirmed the officer was stripped of his police powers and assigned to the Alternate Response Section on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Court records indicate he was previously assigned to the Harrison (11th) District. Delgado-Arroyo couldn’t be reached for comment.
