At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Kane County Board recognized the death of former District 9 board member Gary Daugherty, who resigned late last year.

Daugherty passed away on Oct. 4, at the age of 59, a slide shown at the meeting by Kane County Board Chair Corinne Pierog indicated.

At the meeting, Pierog acknowledged that Daugherty died “way too soon,” and the board held a moment of silence in his memory.

Daugherty was elected to the board’s District 9 seat — which represents the northwest corner of Kane County — in 2022. He resigned last December, about a year before his term was set to expire.

Daugherty, at the time, cited illness as the reason for his stepping down.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Daugherty was recognized for some of his work.

Maureen Shepro — representing her husband, Kane County Historian Ken Shepro — acknowledged Daugherty’s time serving on the county board, as well as his commitment to teaching about firearm safety and regulations.

Shepro said that Daugherty “stayed committed to his duties as an elected official” in spite of his illness, and that, while serving on the county board, he was “always informed and able to actively participate in board debates.”

Republican Jennifer Abbatacola now serves as the board’s District 9 member, having been Daugherty’s stated pick to succeed him. She was sworn in

in February, and is running to keep the seat in the Nov. 3 election against Democrat Marc Guttke.
