Incumbent Democratic state Rep. Amy “Murri” Briel, 51, is in her first term. We appreciate her commitment to affordable healthcare and her support for more independent oversight of the General Assembly. Her enthusiasm for a millionaire tax and instincts on spending are concerns for us.
We don’t know what to make of the accusations of workplace harassment brought by a former staffer against Briel in 2025. Legislative Inspector General Mike McCuskey, who since has resigned over his handling of the Harry Benton sexual harassment investigation, found the allegations against Briel unfounded, according to reports.
Her Republican opponent Liz Bishop, 66, ran against her in 2024, losing by fewer than 600 votes. She’s been described to us as a “calming influence” who would bring balance to the legislature. Bishop, a retired bank examiner, is much admired by Republican leadership and earned our endorsement in 2024.
We believe she would bring a practical perspective on a wide range of issues, but most importantly those that affect our economy and state finances. “Illinois needs tax relief, spending discipline, and economic growth,” she told us. Illinois needs more steady hands willing to exercise fiscal restraint.
Liz Bishop is endorsed.
