Three people were shot when violence erupted during a vigil Wednesday for the victim of a Sept. 21 shooting in Waukegan.

They were all reported to be in stable condition the day after the incident, police said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified Koron Gibson as the man killed in the Sept. 21 shooting. Gibson, a 29-year-old Waukegan resident, was shot at around 7 p.m. in the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue.

The suspected shooters led police on an hour-long chase before police were able to halt their vehicle and take them into custody.

Daveion Gordon, 17, appeared in Lake County Court Wednesday, where authorities said he has been charged with first-degree murder in the case.

On Wednesday, officers responded to the 1700 block of Glen Flora at about 8:20 p.m. after receiving reports that a large unruly crowd had gathered and shots had been fired during what turned out to be a vigil for Gibson.

Officers found three victims with gunshot wounds who were transported to area hospitals.

More than 50 shell casings were collected at the scene, police said.

Gibson’s father, Alex Agee, shouted threats at police and refused to stay out of a crime scene perimeter and was taken into custody, police said. He was charged with aggravated assault, obstructing, and resisting arrest.

Crash sentence

A Lindenhurst man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a 2024 crash that killed his two younger brothers.

Adrian Tiscareno, 23, had pleaded guilty in July to two counts of aggravated DUI in the accident that killed Antony Tiscareno, 16, and 11-year-old Alonso Tiscareno. A third passenger in the car was badly injured.

Authorities said Adrian Tiscareno was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had been driving at over 100 mph in the moments before the crash.

The crash happened at around 11:30 p.m. on July 6, 2024, in the 1700 block of Grand Avenue in Lindenhurst. Police and firefighters reported that the car was on fire when they arrived, and the passengers had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Tiscareno was sentenced Tuesday in Lake County Court by Judge James Booras. Prosecutors asked for an 18-year sentence, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. Family members spoke on Tiscareno’s behalf at the hearing, prosecutors said.

Under the terms of the sentence, Tiscareno must serve 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. The judge also sentenced him to a three-year sentence on a separate DUI count, which will be served concurrently with the eight-year term. He received credit for 408 days already spent in the county jail.

Gurnee standoff

Gurnee police and Lake County sheriff’s officers were able to take a man into custody following a standoff at a home.

Maurice L. Freeman, 45, was arrested after the incident in the 3400 block of Florida Avenue in Gurnee.

Police were called there at about 3:45 a.m. on Sept. 20 after a family member, a 22-year-old man, reported that Freeman had cut him with a kitchen knife. The man, who is Freeman’s nephew, said he had been sleeping when Freeman confronted him, grabbed him by the hair, and slashed at him with the knife.

The man escaped with a small laceration to his leg.

Officers arrived and tried to convince Freeman to surrender, but he refused. Gurnee police called the sheriff’s SWAT team for assistance. After learning that a 15-year-old was still inside, police used a ladder to evacuate the teen.

The SWAT team entered the house and found Freeman in the basement. When he did not surrender, officers used a Taser to subdue him.

He was booked on a count of aggravated battery and two counts of domestic battery.

“This incident demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships between law enforcement agencies,” Gurnee Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan said. “The Lake County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team provided critical assistance that helped us safely remove a juvenile from the home and bring a dangerous situation to a safe conclusion. We appreciate their professionalism and partnership.”

Drowning victim identified

Lake County authorities have positively identified a man whose body was found this spring in Lake Michigan.

The man was identified as Modesto Leyva-Garcia, 61, of Highwood. An autopsy in April confirmed that his death was due to drowning.

Authorities, though, had not been able to positively identify him until a missing persons report was made to police earlier this month.

Police and rescue were called to the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Highland Park on April 17 after receiving reports of a body in the water.

Family members of Levya-Garcia filed a missing person report with Highwood Police on Sept. 13, which led to the identification several days later.

Training in the Park

Gurnee’s Training in the Park program will continue in the coming days.

Representatives of the village’s police, fire, and public works departments will be on hand to demonstrate their skills, including the police K-9 unit, along with other family fun.

The training will visit Vineyard Park on Monday, Betty Russell Park on Tuesday, and Ravinia Park on Wednesday. The programs start at 6 p.m.
