An Orland Park, Illinois woman was killed Sunday morning after she was ejected from her SUV during a crash with a semi on Interstate 80/94 near the Burr Street exit in Gary.

Preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police indicated that a semi was traveling east around 8:30 a.m. when its front left steer tire made contact with the rear passenger side of the woman’s 2016 Lincoln SUV, according to a news release. Police said the impact caused the SUV to rotate to the right, resulting in the driver losing control and entering the south ditch, where it overturned and she was ejected.

Initially, police found the woman alert, conscious, and able to speak with Gary Fire Department paramedics at the scene, but at the hospital her condition deteriorated and she died, the release stated.

Christine Vangampler, 46, was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. at Methodist Hospitals Northlake due to multiple blunt force injuries sustained the motor vehicle crash, according to a release from the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, including determining how the initial contact occurred between the two vehicles.
