VALPARAISO POLICE ACCEPTING CROSSING GUARD APPLICATIONS

The Valparaiso Police Department is now accepting applications for crossing guards to help students safely across streets at designated intersections throughout the city. The assignment requires morning and afternoon availability and will involve covering crossings daily. All applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must successfully pass a complete background check for assignment consideration. Those interested should submit a resume by email to [email protected] no later than 4 p.m. Oct. 9. LOCAL STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR HOUSE INTERNSHIP

Porter County legislators are encouraging area students to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program for the 2027 legislative session. This paid, full-time internship is open to college students, recent graduates and students in law or graduate school from January through April. Interns work in the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis full-time Monday through Friday during the legislative session and gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process. Positions are available in legislative operations, policy and communications. Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.

VALPO U INVITES THE PUBLIC TO EXPERIENCE THE ARTS THIS FALL

The community is invited to celebrate Valparaiso University’s passion for the arts by attending a fall concert or theater performance on the Valpo campus, 1700 Chapel Drive, Valparaiso. Performances are free unless otherwise noted. A Chamber Concert Band Concert will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Resurrection. A Luce Concert Band and Community/University Concert Band Performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Resurrection. A Choral Concert — An American Celebration takes place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Chapel of the Resurrection. Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with the Valparaiso University choirs in a concert featuring American choral music. A schedule of Valparaiso University’s holiday events will be shared at a later date. PURDUE NORTHWEST HOSTS COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY

Financial aid professionals will be on-site at Purdue University Northwest’s Hammond and Westville campuses during the statewide College Goal Sunday programs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The free event will provide assistance to college-bound students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and federal loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide. The FAFSA form must be completed, filed and received by the federal processor on or before the state of Indiana priority deadline of April 15, 2027 to be considered for Indiana state grant funding. In addition, Indiana 21st Century Scholars are required to submit a FAFSA to claim their scholarship. The PNW Hammond campus event will be held in Room 200 of the Student Union and Library Building, 2200 169th St., Hammond. The PNW Westville campus event will be held in in the Cyber Café, Room 114, in the Library-Student-Faculty Building, 1401 S. U.S. 421, Westville. Financial aid professionals and Spanish interpreters will be available at both locations to answer questions and help students complete and file their forms. Students age 23 or younger should attend the event with a parent(s) or guardian(s), and bring completed 2025 IRS 1040 tax returns, 2025 W-2 Forms and other 2025 income and benefits information. Students who work also should bring their income information. Students and parent(s) will need to apply for U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at studentaid.gov before coming to the event. Students, and parent(s), if applicable, will need an FSA Account to sign the FAFSA form. PROGRAM FOCUSES ON BUILDING BETTER BRAIN HEALTH

Join Linda Curley, Health and Human Sciences Extension educator, Purdue University Extension in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association for “Building Brain-Healthy Habits.” The program will be offered twice: at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Merrillville Branch of the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave.; and at 10 a.m. Oct. 26 at the Lowell Public Library, 1505 E. Commercial Ave. Designed to help participants take proactive steps to support brain health at every stage of life, attendees will learn about the 10 Healthy Habits for Your Brain, explore the latest brain health research, including recommendations from the U.S. POINTER study and develop a personalized action plan for building healthier routines.
