New tennis courts at Elmhurst park
The tennis courts at Berens Park in Elmhurst have a new look, thanks to a redevelopment project that ended with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 18 attended by the girls’ tennis team at York Community High School and Elmhurst Park District officials.
The refurbishment included a fresh color scheme, new fencing and new equipment, as well as a modern lighting system with posts moved outside the court fence line, replacing lights more than 25 years old. The central promenade also got an upgrade for spectators with two new shade structures and new bleachers and benches.
The work took place during the summer, creating a better experience for players after temporary fixes in 2004 and 2017 were no longer viable.
Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers called the new tennis courts an example of the Park Board and Park District’s “commitment to provide invigorated parks throughout the community,” per a news release, adding that the district has spent nearly $2.4 million in the last two years at Berens Park.
